World Language

A graphic with the flags of Spain, Italy, and France, with the text 'Foreign Language' superimposed.

Students begin studies in Foreign Language during the 7th grade and conclude the course at the end of 8th grade with a Proficiency Examination to earn one high school credit. Our goal is to inspire students to love learning a new language and to love learning about a new culture, and we strongly encourage all of our students to pursue their language studies until the end of their high school careers (and beyond!). Ask your child's language teacher about the NYS Seal of Biliteracy, a wonderful opportunity that students can begin preparing for in middle school and will help them stand out when considering post-secondary options.

We currently offer the following world languages at Van Wyck JHS:

  1. French
  2. Italian
  3. Spanish
  • Infographic titled "Why Learn Another Language?" highlighting benefits like brain health, friendship opportunities, and cultural enrichment.
